Easy Homemade Applesauce {Recipe}

Whether we’re ready or not, the winter holidays blew in like last weekend’s TX-to-New England snow storm.

The first night of Hanukkah was Tuesday of this week. We’ve lit some candles and opened a couple of gifts, but we haven’t fried (or baked) up any latkes yet. That will come this weekend. I like nonfat plain Greek yogurt with my potato pancakes. The kids prefer sour cream. But, the one topping we all agree on… applesauce.

To get ready for a weekend of potato pancakes, I made a batch of homemade applesauce today. In the Instant Pot. Super easy and within minutes, I had a delicious warm, no-sugar-added applesauce. With as much cinnamon and chunkiness as I like. I used two different varieties of apples for a complex  flavor. The sweeter the apples you choose, the less need there is for added sugar. So, I opted for Fuji apples (they were on sale and are my husband’s favorite) and Golden Delicious. And, I left the Golden Delicious peel on so I only had to peel half of the apples (plus, the soft Golden Delicious peel adds some added dietary fiber).

Oh, and the house smelled like I was baking apple pie,  which is kind of what this applesauce tasted like.

Easy Homemade Applesauce {Recipe}

  • 4 lb. (about 8 large) apples, peeled, cored and diced (I used sweet apples like Fuji and Golden Delicious so I wouldn't need sugar)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp. lemon zest
  • 1 tsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon

  1. Place all items in the Instant Pot. Set Instant Pot to manual (make sure steam vent is closed). Cook on High pressure or 8 minutes. Let sit for 2 minutes and then manually release steam. Let cool slightly. Stir with a spoon or immersion blender or masher to make as chunky or as smooth as you like.

PLEASE SHARE: I’d love to hear what fruit you’re cooking in your Instant Pot over the holidays. I’d love to hear from you!
