Fall is here, and so is football! Whether you’re a die-hard fan or just along for the tailgating fun, food is likely part of the weekend football fun.

We hear so much about the calorie pitfalls of Superbowl snacks, but what about your standard weekend football fare? Chances are good that tailgate noshing racks up excess calories and fat quickly, especially if standard foods like hot dogs, wings, hoagies and nachos are on the weekly menu. This season, change up your game day plan by replacing some of the heavy, calorie-laden standard fare with more nutritious tasty tailgating options.
Like Hummus Deviled Eggs.
Deviled eggs are one of my favorite appetizers. Ever. But, sometimes the mayonnaise-y taste is too creamy for me. And, you have to get the mayonnaise:egg yolk ratio just right. The solution? Hummus.
Hummus deviled eggs are so easy to whip together, rich in dietary fiber (thanks to the chickpeas) and high in protein. And, just two heaping spoons of hummus help you meet your weekly bean recommendations. In addition to dietary fiber and protein, hummus is also rich in iron, B vitamins, heart healthy fats and folate. Recent studies have shown that hummus may help lower blood cholesterol levels and aid weight loss.
Just three simple ingredients to a tasty and more nutritious football appetizer.
- 6 tablespoons Sabra Classic Hummus (or your favorite flavor)
- 8 hard-boiled eggs, sliced in half with yolk removed
- 2 tsp. crushed red pepper
- Place hummus in a sandwich bag and zip top. Cut a small hole in corner of baggie. Place hard-boiled egg whites on a platter or plate. Squeeze hummus into the hole of the hard-boiled egg. Sprinkle with crushed red pepper. Serve at room temperature.
- Makes 4 servings.
